Comparing Photography

These two
magazines are vastly different. For starters they're both a different genre of magazine;
therefore they're aiming for a different target audience. Not only that but the
way they go about their photography is in a similar way as they both use the
same photography techniques, but in different ways as they're trying to make
different things stand out.
For
example, in the 'Vanity Fair' cover Lady GaGa is placed within the rule of
thirds grid, but she's more to the right making it so she isn't positioned in
the centre of the grid she’s been placed to the side, and is equally on
either side of the right line of the gird, this is so that the intersection of
the grid is over her hand. The thing that my eye is instantly drawn to when
looking at this picture is the ring on Lady GaGa's hand, this may be partially
because her hand is in the intersection of the grid, as well as being a bright
colour and therefore standing out due to her black outfit.
Whereas on
the 'The Source's' cover the main image is placed directly in the centre of the
rule of thirds gird, with the majority of his face being smack bang in the
centre, showing the expression on his face, the gun is also a main focus point
of the image. This is shown for the fact that when I first looked at this
cover, my eyes were instantly drawn to the gun that the guy has placed to the
underside of his chin. Then my attention was drawn to the guy’s facial
expression, giving me a brief idea of what the image is about and how it links
to the main article of the cover.
